Middle School age 11-14

Secondary school done differently

Looking for a different path for secondary? At Cardiff Steiner School ages 11-14 aren’t just “in-between” years in the countdown to exams. They’re some of the most formative a young person will ever have – and we treat them that way.

Our Middle School is built around one central idea: that education at this age should meet young people where they actually are. Not where a curriculum says they should be.

For Classes 6-8 (Years 7-9), we create space for students to question, to express themselves, and to develop a clear, confident sense of who they are becoming. The work is intellectually stretching, imaginatively rich and creatively alive, because that’s what this age demands.

“We’ve been so impressed with how our daughter has settled in. She comes home talking about what she’s been learning and you can tell she’s really thinking for herself. The teachers notice what she’s interested in and encourage her to follow it, ask questions and try things out. We love that she’s learning so much, while keeping that spark of curiosity and excitement about the world.”

“Since joining his skills development is clear, but even more evident is his personal growth. In his previous school it was hard to find his place in the hectic, competitive, anonymous structure. He’s always had an empathetic quality and a sense of equality, but these traits were being quashed. He’s now able to feel confident to freely use them, but also understand they are integral to him becoming an active, caring and inspiring young man.”

“Our daughter joined the school at age 11 and she absolutely LOVES it. We felt she was trying to grow up too quickly at her previous school, with peer pressure around music, clothes and technology. Since starting here she is fitting in really well, has made lovely friends and is enjoying expressing herself without fear of what others think.”

Students are welcome to join us from other educational settings at any stage of the Middle School years, subject to availability within the class. We operate an “all year” admissions policy with students joining throughout the year.

Class 5/6 (Year 6) is often an ideal time to join Cardiff Steiner School, offering a valuable bridge year before moving into Middle School.

Students join Cardiff Steiner School at a variety of stages, and many are encountering Steiner education for the first time. We see this not as a challenge, but as an opportunity – a chance to welcome a new perspective into the class and to help a young person find their place within our community.

Joining a new class is a transition, and transitions are themselves part of learning. We work closely with families to help children settle. Before your child begins, we will talk through their previous experience and offer practical guidance where needed. If they are entering Class 6 or Class 9 and have not yet studied a language or taken up an instrument for exmaple, we can suggest ways to prepare and ensure that their teachers understand their starting point. No student is expected to arrive having followed an identical path.

The beauty of Steiner education lies in its responsiveness. In our small school, teachers balance the needs of the group with the needs of each child. Some students we have known for many years; others we are just beginning to know. In every case, we strive to meet each child where they are, to honour their individuality, and to provide experiences that allow them to grow intellectually, creatively and socially.

We are committed to keeping our fees as accessible as possible, while maintaining the quality and integrity of a Steiner education.

Our annual fees in Middle School range from £9,996 to £11,712 per year (£833 to £976 per month) depending on family income. By comparison, fees at other local independent schools are typically in the region of £18,000 to £19,000 per year.

We also offer generous sibling discounts to support families with more than one child at the school:

  • 20% discount on the fees of the second sibling attending at the same time
  • 80% discount on the fees of the third and any subsequent siblings attending at the same time

We believe that an inspiring, holistic education should remain within reach for families, and we work hard to balance financial sustainability with affordability.

Think Rigorously | Create Boldly.

Learning is active and participatory. Through practical investigation, lively discussion, artistic work and collaborative projects, students learn to think rigorously, create boldly and stay genuinely curious. These aren’t soft skills, they are the foundation for everything that follows in our Upper School (ages 14-18) and beyond.

A Connected Curriculum

Our curriculum is deliberately broad. Students explore subjects in real depth – from the laws of electromagnetism to the richness of Shakespearean drama – discovering the vital connections between disciplines.

  • Integrated Academics: Sciences, maths, humanities and arts are woven together, not taught in isolation.
  • The Steiner Breadth: Music, Art & Crafts, Spanish, Games and Movement are core parts of every student’s week.
  • Learning Beyond the Walls: Educational visits and outdoor experiences take learning beyond the classroom walls.

Seen, known and supported.

Middle School is a time of profound change. Students are beginning to understand themselves as individuals and to find their place in the wider world. This is not the time to get lost in a crowd.

With small classes, our teachers invest deeply in knowing each student as a whole person – their strengths, their struggles and what they need to flourish. They build trusting relationships that give students the confidence to take risks and stretch their abilities.

By guiding the class as a close-knit community, we help students navigate the natural challenges of adolescence together, in a group where everyone can feel they belong. When a young person feels genuinely seen and valued, they develop the self-knowledge and confidence to articulate who they are. That’s the foundation everything else is built on.

Curious first. Then scientific.

Curiosity and experimentation lie at the heart of our Middle School Science curriulum. We flip the traditional “teach then show” model. Rather than teaching concepts and then demonstrating them, we begin with direct observation – and let curiosity drive what comes next.

1. Observe

Students encounter a phenomenon with fresh eyes – no pre-loaded explanation, just careful, attentive looking.

Right-open-big Right-open-big

2. Hypothesise

They form their own explanations. What might be happening? What could explain this? They think before they know.

3. Experiment

Ideas are tested. Results are analysed. Students discover the satisfaction of working something out, not being told the answer.

This phenomenological approach does more than teach science – it develops the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that drives innovation. Students become motivated scientists: curious, rigorous and comfortable with the messiness of trial and error. The ability to observe without preconceptions is one of the rarest and most valuable intellectual skills there is.

A balanced approach to tech

As students begin navigating digital media independently – both at  home, and later at school – teachers guide thoughtful conversations about online behaviour, digital literacy, information evaluation and what it means to be a responsible citizen in the digital world.

The entire school is smartphone-free, and Cardiff Steiner School is part of the Smartphone Free Childhood School Network. We actively encourage families to work together to establish shared guidelines for introducing personal devices and media, creating a consistent approach between home and school.

Our approach isn’t about banning technology. It’s about developing the awareness, self-discipline and intentionality to use it well, at the right time. Students who learn to be present, focused and deliberate in childhood carry those skills into every part of their adult lives.

This shared sense of responsibility – between students, teachers and families – is one of the things that makes our community feel distinctly different from mainstream school life.

Learning to lead yourself.

Middle School is a time when students gradually take greater responsibility for their own learning. This culminates in one of the most distinctive parts of our curriculum: the Class 8/9 Project.

The Class 8/9 Project is a year-long, self-directed undertaking – driven entirely by the student’s own interests and initiative. Each project combines original research, creative work and practical skills, building towards a written report, an oral presentation and a public exhibition shared with the whole school community.

The experience of seeing a long-term, self-chosen effort through to completion – from the first idea to standing in front of an audience and presenting it – is genuinely transformative. Students discover what they’re capable of when no one is telling them what to do.
