New research suggests we’ve reached a crisis point with educating teens. UK teenagers are some of the unhappiest in the world, with rising school absenteeism, disengagement, and surveys showing school is the most stressful thing in their lives. ![]()

“Young people, hungry to learn, overwhelmingly associate school with apathy and stress … it’s bad for countries that need educated citizens. It’s also bad for families trying to raise children who can thrive in the 21st century."![]()
"British 16-year-olds are being whipped down the furlongs towards the high jumps of GCSE exams, a few short terms before lurching into A-levels. Meanwhile, our 14-year-olds are being saddled up for the years-long, rote-learning trudge towards them.”![]()
Education analysts, Jenny Anderson and Rebecca Winthrop’s, three-year research found strong themes to redress this: giving teens real problems to solve, offering them some autonomy over their topics, and linking what they learn to the real world.![]()
“Even small amounts of choice given to students increased their motivation and scores. However, this is rarely possible in exam-focused systems with heavy curriculums such as the UK’s. 68% of British teachers say they don’t have time to respond to student interests due to ‘curriculum content pressure’. ‘The adolescent brain is incredible’ Winthrop says. ‘They’re just taking off, hardwired to learn, explore, create and connect. It’s just you often stifle that in school’,”![]()
At Cardiff Steiner School we do education differently. Our Upper School NZCSE qualification allows students to participate in our broad, rich curriculum AND specialise in-depth in their areas of interest. ![]()
As part of their final year, our students undertake a year-long independent research project in an area of their choice. They spend a year, together with their mentors, developing their ideas and components. The students’ independence and initiative are challenged in entirely new ways to prepare them for the lifelong journey of self-education. At year-end they produce a fully referenced, bound and formatted report from their research and present their findings in an oral presentation to a public audience. ![]()
Projects have included forensic science research, building an electric guitar from scratch, detailed business planning, writing a novel and recording an EP. The project is the unique and distinctive demonstration of students’ ability to work independently, in-depth and with academic rigor. It is highly valued for university admissions and was a strength of the School recognised at our last Estyn inspection.![]()
“In line with the school philosophy, whilst retaining breadth and balance, the school’s curriculum allows for a high degree of choice and personalisation at all ages….By the time pupils reach the later years of the upper school, they collaborate with teachers to map out tailored learning programmes. They select subjects, topics and learning outcomes to construct highly individualised pathways to their qualifications.”
