⭐Student Showcase – Class 8 ProjectUpper School students presented their Class 8 Projects in July, where the School community came to listen to each student’s personal journey. The Class 8 Project is a year-long independent research project, at age 14-15, in an area of student’s choosing. It must involve learning something new, developing a new skill and result in a physical product to encapsulate their learning over this year.Over the twelve months students embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm, working at home in their own time with a professional mentor of their choosing - a person outside school with the ability to guide, teach, inform and reflect back throughout this journey. The students’ final journals and oral presentations gave a sense of just how much each of them owned their journey, and it was a true pleasure to see and hear them reflect on the fruits of their work. To have the confidence to stand in front of an adult audience and show a part of yourself in a mature and authentic way is a true achievement at this age.In this series of posts, we’ll be showcasing some of the student’s work, starting with Iolo.Iolo set out ambitiously to write a novel and, as a first step, read and explored a range of literary classics, from The Great Gatsby to The Goldfinch. Along the way, he wrote and rewrote an outline of a plot, developing characters and reflecting on literary styles. Each redraft, with the help of his mentor, reflected thoroughly on its form, as well as shortcomings. Each new outline was inspired not only by his conversations with his mentor and the literary works he read in between, but also places and experiences. Iolo’s 45-page long collection of writings are a very personal journey through literature and writing, in which he appears as both writer, literary critic and philosopher, reflecting extensively on his own ambition to write a novel. His final piece of writing, was a short story, Dylan Thomas style, about a man inheriting from his friend a small bookshop in a Welsh seaside town, and facing a decision whether or not to sell it to a property developer. The man, who sees it as his ‘obligation’ to write the novel he always promised his friend to write, discovers that he needs to defy the pull of tradition and move on from the place that has been his comfort. As such, the story is a beautiful culmination of Iolo’s own explorations and reflections. Iolo blew the crowd away with his very engaging and authentic public presentation, showing his depth of thinking and self-reflection, livened up with sprinkles of his humour. It was clear Iolo has a passion for experimenting with words, and, perhaps equally so, a passion for ideas. We have a small number of Upper School places for enrolment now for students looking for a richer, rounded more relevant education.
