Matthew Spence – Upper School Humanities/Arts

Matthew joined us as full-time Upper School Hamanities/Arts Teacher in August 2025, making the move from the US to Wales.

Matthew has a Degree in English, and has studied at Masters Level in teaching English to adolescents. He completed the course for Steiner Teaching at Fair Oaks Rudolf Steiner College, California, and has a deep interest in Steiner Education and the works of Rudolf Steiner.

Matthew has been teaching and working with young people since 2011, including teaching English and Humanities in middle school, and Humanities to grades 9-12 in Florida, Brooklyn and Ithaca, New York state. He spent several years as a Youth Mentor and Family Caseworker with at-risk youths age 6 to 17, and has also worked as a Guitar Instructor and Band Leader.

Matthew has a natural sensibility for teaching this age group, working in the relational and responsive way that is deeply imbued in Steiner Upper School education.

Matthew teaches the full range of humanities including English, History, History of Art and Music, Philosophy, Religion, Architecture, Drama and also Art.
